Developers Aren't Going Away — AI Doesn't Know Your Domain, and Bridging That Gap Is Your Job
Pessimism is spreading through developer communities.
"If AI writes all the code, why do we need developers?" "Junior hiring is collapsing." "In ten years, software engineering won't exist as a job category." These claims keep circulating. They're not baseless. Repetitive CRUD work, boilerplate generation, basic API integrations — AI is genuinely absorbing these faster than most people expected. The pessimism has real evidence behind it.
But the picture that pessimism assumes — AI that understands your domain, designs your architecture autonomously, and takes responsibility for its decisions — has a hole in it.
A large, quiet hole.
The Contradiction in "Domain-Aware AI"
Saying AI understands domains is half-right.
Ask it to build a stock trading app and it produces something credible: ticker search, buy/sell orders, portfolio tracking, performance charts. AI knows what a stock trading app should look like — that knowledge is densely represented in its training data. At this level of generality, "domain understanding" is a fair description.
But ask it to build your brokerage's trading platform and the picture changes completely.
Take any established financial institution as an example. Its trading app sits on top of the generic financial domain — but then adds a layer that's entirely its own: proprietary commission structures, margin lending collateral calculation rules, position-specific trading halt logic, forced liquidation triggers, regulatory reporting integrations built over decades of back-and-forth with financial authorities. These aren't "stock trading app" knowledge. They're the accumulated business rules of a specific organization that formed under the constant pressure of money, regulation, and consequence.
AI doesn't know any of this.
It's not in the training data. Internal policy documents aren't published. Proprietary risk management logic doesn't appear in open-source repositories. AI can be brilliant and still know nothing about the internal domain of a specific organization — because that knowledge exists only inside the people who built and maintained those systems.
This might sound like a special case. It isn't. Every company is this company.
An e-commerce giant has a public-facing domain (online retail) and a private-layer domain (its specific delivery prioritization algorithm, its inventory reservation rules under surge conditions, its edge-case return policy logic). AI knows e-commerce. It doesn't know how this specific retailer works.
A fintech startup has a public-facing domain (payments, transfers) and a private-layer domain (its specific fraud detection thresholds, its credit scoring integration policies, its transaction limits under various conditions). AI knows fintech. It doesn't know this company's fintech.
Your company is the same — regardless of size. The way your organization actually runs: the exception-to-the-exception handling, the implicit contracts with legacy systems, the unofficial rules that apply to certain customer segments — these live somewhere in the codebase, were never documented properly, and exist primarily in the heads of people who've been there long enough. The structure is identical whether you're a large enterprise or a small startup.
AI doesn't know any of it. And it never will unless someone tells it.
So Who Does the Telling?
This is where the developer's role gets redefined.
Yes, the share of time spent directly writing code is decreasing. But the space that opens up isn't filled by AI — it's filled by the people who design what to tell AI and how.
What does that work actually look like?
It means, before you hand a task to AI, you articulate how this company, this service, this feature is supposed to behave. Not requirement documents — something deeper. What rules this system must never violate. Where one component's responsibility ends and another begins. Which module wins when two conflict. Without this articulation, AI makes different judgment calls every session. Consistency breaks down, and fixing one thing breaks three others.
This is where the concept of SSOT — Single Source of Truth — becomes critical. A document that AI can reliably reference: not the code itself, but the principles and constraints the code is supposed to embody. Architecture Decision Records, domain glossaries, invariant lists — these become the interface through which an organization's domain knowledge becomes legible to AI.
Who does this work? Developers. The same people who used to write the code.
More precisely: people who understand code and can read the domain. People who can translate bidirectionally between business requirements and implementation specifics. That translation capacity becomes the core professional asset.
What "Coding Is Being Commoditized" Actually Means
"Coding is being commoditized" is true. It's already happening.
The mistake is connecting that directly to "developers are becoming unnecessary." Coding being commoditized means code production is becoming a low-level operation — not that the entire process of building software is being automated.
When the printing press arrived, scribes disappeared. But writers didn't — they multiplied. Lower production costs drove an explosion in demand for the underlying content. Lower code generation costs will drive an explosion in demand for software, and the demand for people who make that software work correctly won't decrease.
What changes is where in the day developers spend their time.
Right now, a significant portion of developer time goes to writing code. Going forward, that share decreases — and more time goes to designing and managing the context that helps AI write code well. Whether this is a bad change, or whether it's actually letting developers focus on what they should have been doing all along, is a matter of perspective.
Personally, I lean toward the latter.
Typing code is not the essence of development. Understanding the problem, designing the structure, defining the constraints — that's the essence. If AI handles the typing, the argument could be made that developers finally get to spend more time on the actual core of the work.
What the Pessimists Miss
Developer pessimism assumes a trajectory: AI keeps getting smarter until it replaces everything developers do.
But that picture doesn't include organization-specific domain knowledge. The internal knowledge AI cannot learn from training data. Undocumented business rules. Implicit contracts with legacy systems. These aren't things AI will ever know on its own, regardless of capability improvements. Someone has to convey them.
The conveyance process is not simple. It's not about throwing requirement documents at the AI — it's about structuring domain knowledge in a form AI can reference consistently. Managing the context window so critical constraints are always present. Preventing context dilution as projects grow longer or models change.
This is a technical problem. And right now, very few developers are solving it well.
The pessimistic case is right about one thing: the role that consists only of writing code is contracting. AI can do that faster and cheaper. But that's a statement about a specific role configuration, not about the developer profession as a whole. It applies only to people whose entire job was code production.
The center of gravity is shifting.
From code writing to system design. From implementation to constraint definition. From typing to translating domain knowledge into forms that AI can reason about reliably.
Whether this shift reads as a crisis or an opportunity depends on the person. Nobody can say for certain which is correct. But one thing is clear: an AI that doesn't know your organization's domain cannot operate effectively inside that organization without someone who understands that domain and can communicate it.
